No. 15 UC Davis Wins Two At Bronco Invite

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Russell Hampton scored a total of five goals as No. 15 UC Davis posted a pair of wins on the opening day of the Bronco Invitational collegiate men's water polo tournament at Santa Clara's Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday. Hampton posted four goals in the Aggies' 12-3 win over Cal Lutheran, then senior Jim Breen completed a hat trick in an 8-6 victory against Redlands.

The Aggies improve to 7-4 overall and 6-2 against members of the Western Water Polo Association.

Hampton scored one goal in the first quarter and two in the second as UC Davis took a 6-2 lead at the halftime break. Freshman Jared Clapham also scored a pair in the second frame then completed his own hat trick on a 6-on-5 chance in the third period, extending that lead to 8-2.

Kevin Driscoll had two goals, while Colin Hicks, Breen and Kevin Meisel each added one in the win over CLU.

UC Davis stormed to a 4-0 lead after eight minutes and held a 5-1 advantage at the break during the nightcap win over the Bulldogs. Besides Breen's three goals, Hampton, Ryan Hagens, Anders MacCarthy, Brendan Sigourney and Luke Collins each tallied a goal.

The Aggies complete action at the Bronco with games against Whittier and host Santa Clara on Sunday.
