DAVIS, Calif. - Joey Mills hit a grand slam in the second inning and starter Martin Medina gave up just two runs on five hits through seven innings to lift Cal State Bakersfield to a 5-2 victory over UC Davis in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The Aggies fall to 11-41 with the loss while the Roadrunners improve their overall record to 12-35. It marked the first meeting between the two schools as CSUB is in its inaugural season of collegiate baseball.
All seven runs in the game were scored in four separate innings. The five Bakersfield runs came from their bottom two hitters. Mills hit his grand slam in the second inning and JJ Henry doubled home the team's only other run in the eighth. Henry finished with two doubles and three hits and was the only player with multiple hits on the day.
Medina went seven innings in the start and struck out three batters while allowing only two runs on five hits. Medina was able to pitch around six walks in the victory. Reliever Sam Jones came on in the seventh inning and also struck out three in his first save of the season.
The Aggies' two runs came in the first and third innings. Ty Kelly doubled home Justin Schafer in the first inning to give UC Davis its only lead of the game. Ryan Scoma singled to right field in the third inning to plate Daniel Cepin from third. Seven different Aggies had hits in the game.
Aggie starter Scott Chew pitched six innings in the loss. Aside from the four-run second, Chew pitched shutout baseball in the other five innings and struck out two batters. Reliever Nathan Slater had a solid 1.2 innings of work as he allowed just one hit while striking out three.
UC Davis got out of a no-out bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning without giving up a run. Chew retired the side on three straight pop outs. The Aggies threatened a couple more times in the game after scoring their final run in the third.
