STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Ty Kelly drove in a season-high five runs, freshman left-hander Anthony Kupbens put together his second consecutive effective start and UC Davis scored a combined 10 runs in two innings to defeat Stanford, 11-2, Tuesday night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in non-conference baseball action.
The win improves the Aggies' overall record to 11-40 and gives them a season split with the Cardinal in the two-game series. Stanford falls to 29-23 with the loss.
Kelly doubled home two runs during the Aggies' six-run second inning and hammered a three-run homer to left-center field in the Aggies' four-run eighth inning to finish with a season-best five RBIs. Kelly's double puts him at 18 on the season, which places him in top seven on the single season list. Kelly also had a game-high three runs scored in the contest.
Ryan Scoma tied teammate Kyle Mihaylo with a game-high three hits and joined Scott Kalush with two RBIs. Daniel Cepin and Justin Schafer drove in the other Aggie runs and combined to score three runs. Schafer extended his season-best hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the eighth.
Kupbens put together another solid Tuesday start by going seven innings and allowing only two runs on five hits while striking out a game-high six batters and not issuing a walk. It marks the second straight win for Kupbens and comes on the heels of the six shutout innings he pitched last Tuesday in the Aggies' 9-1 win over Santa Clara. In addition, Tom Briner closed out the game with two scoreless innings and struck out three batters.
The Aggie offense pounded out 15 hits and made the Cardinal dig deep into their bullpen and use eight different pitchers. Only Alex Pracher went more than 1.1 innings. Starter Scott Snodgress gave up three runs in only one inning of work in the loss.
Stanford was led offensively by Brent Milleville's two hits and one run scored. Adam Gaylord homered and Zach Jones hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the only Cardinal runs.
UC Davis scored a run in the first inning off an RBI-single from Scoma that scored Kelly from third base.
The Aggies then tacked on six runs in the second inning to jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead. Jared Thompson opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single from Mihaylo. After Thompson was throw out at home on a fielder's choice, Scott Heylman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Kalush who singled through the left side to plate Mihaylo and Eric Johnson. Schafer then sent a sacrifice fly to left field to score Heylman from third. The inning continued with a single from Cepin to put two on for Kelly, who doubled to center field to score both runners. Scoma capped the inning with his second straight RBI-single to bring Kelly home from second.
Stanford score a run in the second inning to get on the scoreboard. Milleville doubled and advanced to third on a fly out. Jones then sent a sac fly to left field to bring Milleville home.
The Cardinal platted their final run in the fifth off a solo home run from Gaylord.
After five scoreless innings, UC Davis broke out again with four runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach. With one out, Kalush walked and Schafer singled on a hit-and-run to put runners on the corners. Cepin then singled up the middle to score Kalush. Kelly followed with a three-run shot to left-center field to clear the bases. The home run is Kelly's fourth of the season and gives him the team lead.
UC Davis closes out its 2009 season with four straight home games. The Aggies host Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday at 2:30 p.m and then welcome Cal State Northridge over the weekend for a Big West Conference series.
