Final Stats
DAVIS, Calif. - UC Riverside scored single runs in five innings, added six more in the ninth and road a solid start by Paul Applebee to earn an 11-1 victory over UC Davis during the series finale in Big West Conference baseball action at Dobbins Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Highlanders salvage the three-game series with the victory and improve to 29-16 overall and 8-10 in conference play. UC Davis, who won the first two games of the series, is now 9-36 and 3-15.
Applebee pitched a solid game for UCR as he went 6.1 innings and gave up only one run on five hits while striking out a game-best four batters to earn his team-leading eighth win of the season. Dustin Emmons and Joseph Kelly combined to throw scoreless baseball the rest of the way and struck out three batters.
Dayne Quist also pitched effectively for the Aggies and had what UC Davis head coach Rex Peters called his best showing of the season in the tough loss. Quist yielded three earned runs on seven hits and struck out three.
After managing to score just one run in first, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings, the Highlanders broke open a 5-1 game in the ninth inning with a six-run showing. Justin Schultz doubled home two runs in the inning while Tony Nix, Carl Uhl and Joey Gonzales drove in one run apiece. The other run was unearned due to a fielding error.
The Aggies' lone run came off an RBI double from Eric Johnson in the second inning, which tied the game at 1-1. Ty Kelly opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a ground out. Johnson then doubled down the right field line during the next at-bat to plate Kelly.
Nix led the Highlander's offense with three hits and two RBIs. Uhl had a game-high three RBIs despite having only one hit in the game. Schultz also drove in two runs while Robert Brantly hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. A total of five UCR players drove in runs while four had multiple hits.
Justin Schafer led the Aggies with two hits on the day. Johnson, Daniel Cepin and Ryan Scoma accounted for the other three UC Davis hits. Scoma's lone hit was also a double.
The Aggies begin their final road stand of the season next weekend with a non-conference game at Santa Clara on Tuesday and a three-game conference series at No. 1 UC Irvine over the weekend. The five-game road stand ends May 19 at Stanford.
