Game 2

DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis softball team was defeated by No. 22 Cal Poly Saturday afternoon at La Rue Field. The Mustangs swept the Big West Conference doubleheader by claiming a 4-1 victory in the first game and rallying for a 3-2 win in the second game. The day also marked the Aggies' 5th Annual "StrikeOut Cancer" event to raise money for the UC Davis Cancer Center.

Erin Emde, Jessica Hancock and Jessica Gonzalez each collected two hits on the day. Emde and Stauder drove in a run apiece for UC Davis (21-25, 5-9 Big West). Cal Poly (33-9, 12-2 Big West) extended its winning streak to 12 games and moved into first place atop the Big West.

The Mustangs scored an early run in the first game when Anna Cahn delivered a run-scoring single with two outs to make it 1-0.

The Aggies would even the score in the third. Hancock led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice by Rachel Miller. After advancing to third on a groundout, Hancock came home to score on a fielding error as the Aggies tied the game at 1-1.

It looked as if the Mustangs would regain the lead in the fourth after they loaded the bases with one out. Hancock then pitched out of the jam forcing a pop-up and groundout to retire the side.

UC Davis created an opportunity in the bottom of the fifth when singles by Marissa Araujo and Miller eventually led to runners on first and second with one out. A double play, however, ended the threat and kept the game scoreless heading to the sixth inning.

That's when the Mustangs loaded the bases, leading to a three-run double by Krysten Cary and a 4-1 lead.

UC Davis wasted little time scoring in the second game. Belinda Paine led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. A walk to Stauder followed by a groundout put runners at second and third with one out. Emde then put the Aggies in front with an RBI-single, and Stauder scored on the same play as the result of an error on the throw from the outfield.

Cal Poly threatened in the fourth by loading the bases with one out. Again, though, Hancock pitched out of trouble by forcing an inning-ending double play to preserve the 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs cut the deficit in half with a run in the fifth and then tied the game on a solo homer by Stephanie Correia with one out in the sixth. Cal Poly added the decisive run in the seventh.

Cal Poly outhit UC Davis 8-4 in the first game and 12-7 in the second game. Hancock started both games and allowed a total of three runs with six strikeouts.

Both teams wore pink in recognition of breast cancer awareness as UC Davis conducted its fifth "StrikeOut Cancer" event to benefit the UC Davis Cancer Center.

The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at noon.
