DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Juliet Moss tallied four goals, becoming her school's all-time career scoring leader in the process, while three other Spartan players each posted hat tricks to lead No. 6 San Jose State to a 14-5 win over No. 10 UC Davis in non-conference women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies fall to 22-9 for the season. The Spartans improve to 19-12.
Senior Lindsay Kiyama scored two 6-on-5 goals in the fourth quarter to lead UC Davis offensively. Junior Ashley Chandler, freshman Christina Miyabe and sophomore Heidi Kucera each had one goal for the Aggies.
For SJSU, Dani Curran, Tanya Torres and Adriana Vogt each contributed three goals to aid Moss' total. Curran had all three of her goals in the first quarter, helping the Spartans jump out to a 4-0 start.
UC Davis finally reached the scoreboard with 32 seconds left in the first period as Chandler connected on a lob, converting an outlet pass from center Dakotah Mohr.
San Jose State scored four unanswered in the second period to craft an 8-1 lead, starting with Moss' penalty shot at the 7:07 mark. In all, three of her four goals came as a result of Aggie five-meter fouls.
The Spartans shot 9-for-13 in the first half, while UC Davis managed to hit just 2 of 12 before the break. SJSU was particularly effective in capitalizing on Aggie major fouls, scoring five 6-on-5 goals in addition to Moss' penalty shots.
Vogt had two goals in a 4-0 San Jose State third period, while the Aggies were scoreless on eight shooting attempts in the frame. UC Davis recovered to score three goals in the fourth, all on 6-on-5 opportunities.
The contest coincided with the campus's Picnic Day open house, and served as a home finale for UC Davis seniors Kiyama, Sofia Patronas, Sarah Odegard, Diana Pivacek, Emily Kitchens and Cari MacPhail.
The Aggies return to action at the inaugural Big West Conference tournament, hosted by Pacific from April 24-26.
