Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - No. 15 Cal Poly scored four runs in the fourth inning to increase its lead to five runs and went on to defeat UC Davis, 8-4, during the second game of a Big West Conference baseball series in front of 1,712 fans at Baggett Stadium Saturday night. The win gives the Mustangs, who won yesterday's opener 11-10 in 10 innings, a series victory.

The Aggies fall to 6-27 overall and 1-6 in conference with the loss while Cal Poly is now 25-9 and 7-4. It marks the second straight year the Mustangs have defeated UC Davis in a conference series.

Cal Poly platted four runs in the fourth inning to increase its lead to 7-2 and would hold the Aggies to two runs over the remainder of the contest. Four of the Mustangs' eight runs were unearned.

Junior Tim Busbin pitched the final 3.1 innings for UC Davis and helped keep his team in the game by allowing only one run on one hit and striking out two. Mustang starter Matt Leonard allowed three runs on four hits in the win. Sophomore Scott Chew got the loss.

On the offensive side, eight different Aggies had one hit in the game. Leading that pack was sophomore Scott Heylman, who hit a two-run double in the second inning and walked a game-high three times. Sophomore Justin Schafer and senior Ryan Scoma both singled and drove home runs to improve their consecutive game hitting streaks to eight.

For Cal Poly, D.J. Gentile set a single game record with three sacrifice flies. Ryan Lee tied a school record with his 25th consecutive game with a hit and finished with a game-high three hits and three runs scored. Bobby Crocker also scored three runs.

The Mustangs opened the scoring with a run in the first inning off a sac fly from Gentile. UC Davis scored two runs in the second inning to take its only lead of the game. Heylman sent an RBI-double to left field to score Scoma and junior Kyle Mihaylo.

Cal Poly added two more runs in the third inning and tacked on four in the fourth to jump ahead 7-2. A total of four unearned runs where scored off a throwing error and two passed balls.

Schafer drove in a run in the fifth to pull UC Davis to a 7-3 deficit, but Cal Poly added another run off a Gentile sac fly in the sixth to retake a five-run lead.

UC Davis scored the final run of the game in the seventh behind an RBI from Scoma.

The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m.
