DAVIS, Calif. - Senior attacker Lindsay Kiyama scored a total of four goals, including a hat trick in UC Davis' 11-6 evening win over Santa Clara, to help the 11th-ranked Aggies split the second day of Aggie Shootout women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center on Sunday. UC Davis previously lost, 12-5, to top-ranked Stanford before taking the five-goal win from the Broncos.
The Aggies move to 14-6 for the season.
In Sunday's closest contest, Santa Clara junior Meg Zimmerman scored two minutes into the sudden-death overtime period to lead the Broncos to an 11-10 upset of No. 17 Cal State Bakersfield. The Roadrunners later fell to the Cardinal by an 18-3 final in other neutral-site action.
In UC Davis' first game, junior center Dana Nelsen scored two first-half goals to help the Aggies stay within a 6-4 deficit against Stanford. However, the Cardinal pulled away in the second half, scoring five unanswered during the next 12 minutes of play to claim the win. Kiyama and freshmen Alicia Began and Ariel Feeney also had goals for UC Davis. Kelly Eaton, Alyssa Lo and Alex Koran each scored two to lead the Cardinal offensively.
In Sunday's finale, Kiyama had two goals in the Aggies' 5-0 start against SCU, then hit a five-meter penalty shot in the final seconds of hte second period to provide UC Davis with an 8-3 cushion at the break. Senior Sofia Patronas scored a 6-on-5 goal to ignite the Aggies' opening run, then tacked on her second goal in the third.
The quadrupleheader opened in exciting fashion as Santa Clara overcame deficits of 6-3 and 9-6 en route to its sudden-death victory. Trailing by that three-goal margin with two minutes left in regulation, Broncos Taylor Harkins, Amy Lamb and Claire Linney scored in succession to force the overtime, then Zimmerman converted a 6-on-5 chance to put SCU up by one in the first overtime period. However, Bakersfield senior Amanda Ortiz hit her third goal of the game with 1:11 left in the second overtime to set up the sudden-death period.
This was the 29th running of the Aggie Shootout event, although the 2009 installment was not technically a tournament but rather a set of consecutive round-robin days with two separate groups of teams.
UC Davis continues its month-long homestand with a non-conference game against Maryland Saturday.
