PORTLAND, Ore. - Riley Henricks drove in runs during both games and Portland earned 10-9 and 5-3 victories to sweep a doubleheader from UC Davis in non-conference baseball action at Joe Etzel Field Saturday. The Aggies fall to 2-8 overall with the losses while the Pilots improve to 8-4.
The wins also give the Pilots a sweep of the three-game series and pushes their winning streak over the Aggies to six games. Portland won two of the three games by two runs and the third by a single run.
Redshirt freshman Tony Bongiovanni led the Aggies with RBIs in both games. He hit his first career home run in the opening game to drive home two runs. Junior Ty Kelly also had a two-run homer while Scott Heylman made three Aggies with two RBIs.
For Portland, Henricks had two RBIs in each contest to help his team extend its winning streak to five games.
Both teams combined for 43 hits as both games saw each team record double-digit hits.
In the second game, UC Davis scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Sophomore Daniel Cepin led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Following a single to second base from Kelly, Kyle Mihaylo reached on a fielder's choice to score Cepin. Eric Johnson then doubled home Mihaylo and scored in the next at-bat off Bongiovanni's single to center field.
Portland erased the Aggie lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and never trailed again in the game. Henricks highlighted the huge inning with a two-run single.
Both teams had their chances in the remaining innings despite only one run being scored. Portland broke through for the final time with a single run in the sixth inning off a fielding error with a runner on third base.
The Aggies lost a slugfest in the first game by a single run, 10-9. The game went back-and-forth throughout with six lead changes. The Aggies opened the game with two runs in the first inning behind a two-run home run from Kelly.
The Aggies' lead did not hold up long as they yielded five runs in the bottom half of the inning to fall behind, 5-2. The Pilots returned the favor with a two-run homer of their own from Cort Carpenter and scored two unearned runs off a fielding error.
UC Davis then put up its biggest inning of the season with four runs in the third to go ahead 6-5. Ryan Scoma and Grant Hirneise both drove in runs while Bongiovanni capped the inning with a two-run shot to right field.
Portland tied the game in the third with a single run off another home run, this one a solo shot from Craig Smith.
Following two scoreless innings, UC Davis retook the lead at 7-6 with a manufactured run in the seventh. Cepin doubled to start the inning, stole third during the next at-bat and took home on wild pitch.
The Pilots then retook the lead again at 8-7 with two more runs in the bottom part of the inning. However, with two more runs in the eighth, UC Davis was on top 9-8. Heylman had a two-run single to highlight the inning.
Portland claimed the lead for good with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to earn the 10-9 victory. Henricks hit a two-RBI double to bring home the eventual game-winning run.
UC Davis returns to action on Tuesday when they return home to host Nevada at 2:30 p.m.
