Mohr, Miller Lead No. 11 Aggies To Two Wins

March 7, 2009

DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore center Dakotah Mohr scored a total of six goals while freshman Kaylee Miller performed her first career hat trick to lead 11th-ranked UC Davis to a pair of victories in Aggie Shootout collegiate women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday. The Aggies rallied late in a 17-8 win over Sonoma State in their morning game, then dispatched No. 17 Cal State Bakersfield by a 14-5 final in the nightcap.

The Aggies, hosting their home-opening series, improve to 13-5 for the season.

Mohr scored four goals in Saturday's opener against the Seawolves, helping UC Davis escape from a 5-3 deficit midway in the second period. She converted a 6-on-5 situation with 1:44 remaining in the first half to tie the score at 6-6, then scored immediately after to put the Aggies up by one heading into the break. Mohr converted another power play to start the third period as part of her team's run of eight unanswered goals.

Four other UC Davis players - Miller, senior Lindsay Kiyama, sophomore Rachelle Smith and freshman Lyndsay Sutterley - each chipped in two goals in the win over SSU.

In contrast to their slow start against Sonoma, UC Davis ran up six straight goals to open its evening win over the Roadrunners. Miller hit an outside shot midway through the first quarter, then landed a cross-cage attempt at the end of the period as part of that run. She completed her hat trick with 4:14 in the second, placing her two-meter shot into the high left corner to put the Aggies up by a 7-1 edge.

Junior Ashley Chandler also had a hat trick in the win over CSUB, scoring a pair of second-quarter goals from down low, then converting a rare 5-on-4 opportunity during the third period. UC Davis' early success in the win were helped by Roadrunner shooting woes in the first quarter: CSUB had three 6-on-5 shots bar out in that period, shooting 0-for-7 to start the game.

Mohr added two goals in the evening win to bring her daily total to five. Freshman Carey Faber and sophomore Michelle Hook also scored two goals each against the `Runners.

All four Aggie goalkeepers saw minutes during Saturday's tripleheader. Senior Diana Pivacek was arguably the most notable of the performances. She tallied four goals in each game, amassing about 25 minutes of net time.

In Saturday's neutral game, CSUB senior Amanda Ortiz scored three goals and senior utility Petra Koudelkova added two to help the Roadrunners hold onto a 9-7 win over SSU. Ortiz managed to hit just one of her first 10 shot attempts, converting a five-meter penalty shot in the second period. However, the 2008 Western Water Polo Association Player of the Year came through when it counted most for her team, converting a man-up goal with 1:17 left in the game to bring the score to its final tally.

For the Seawolves, sophomore Emily Pearce and junior Laurel Stricklin scored hat tricks against Cal State Bakersfield and UC Davis, respectively. Senior goalie Lysa Lombard notched 11 saves in the loss to CSUB, the second-highest total of the day behind Roadrunner Veronica Campbell, who totalled 14 blocks in that contest.

The Aggie Shootout continues on Sunday as a four-game set involving UC Davis, Cal State Bakersfield, Santa Clara and top-ranked Stanford. The 2009 Shootout is technically not a tournament, but rather two consecutive days of round-robin play involving two separate sets of teams. However, for the sake of both convenience and tradition, the weekend bears the name of UC Davis' annual home tournament.
