UC Davis Ends Skid With Convincing Win Over Fresno State

March 31, 2009

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Dayne Quist allowed only two runs off three hits and struck out six batters over seven innings, and five UC Davis different UC Davis players drove in two runs in an 11-3 non-conference baseball victory over Fresno State Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The 11 runs off 15 hits were both season highs for the Aggies, who improve to 4-17 overall with the victory. The Bulldogs, who were among others receiving votes in the national polls this week, fall to 13-11 overall and has now dropped three of their last five games to UC Davis. The win also snaps a six-game losing streak for the Aggies.

For Quist, the six strikeouts and seven innings pitched were both career highs and earned him his team-leading second victory of the season. After giving up single runs in the first two innings, he settled down and did not allow a run while striking out five through the remaining five innings of work.

The Aggies were led offensively by junior Jared Thompson and senior Ryan Scoma, both of which cranked out a game-high two doubles and two RBIs off three hits. Thompson also tied a game high with two runs scored. Sophomore Daniel Cepin, junior Ty Kelly and redshirt freshman Tony Bongiovanni each drove home two runs. Senior Grant Hirneise accounted for the other Aggie RBI. Overall, the Aggies accounted for six doubles in the game.

For the defending champion Bulldogs, Tom Mendonca, Alan Ahmady and Danny Muno each drove in a run and joined Dusty Robinson as the only four Fresno State players with a hit in the game.

Matt Morse gave up seven runs, five of which were unearned, in the loss. The Bulldogs threw five different pitchers in the contest.

The two teams exchanged single runs during the first two innings of the game. Fresno State took the early 1-0 lead behind an opening walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI-single from Muno. The Aggies tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a bases-loaded walk to Bongiovanni.

Ahmady hit a solo home run to open the second inning and gave Fresno State it's final lead of the game. The Aggies tied the score again in the bottom of the inning as Cepin drove a sacrifice fly to center field to score freshman Scott Kalush from third.

UC Davis broke the game open with a season-high five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead. All five of the Aggie runs were unearned due to a fielding error on the Bulldog second baseman. Kelly drove in the first run on a sac fly. The Aggies then received three straight doubles from Thompson, Scoma and Bongiovanni to plate three more runs. The final RBI came off a single from Hirneise that brought Bongiovanni home from second base.

The Aggies added three more in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to take a commanding 11-2 lead. Kelly hit another sac fly in to start the scoring in the fifth and Thompson followed with an RBI-single to left field. Scoma then hit his second RBI-double of the contest during the next at bat to score Thompson.

The single run in the sixth came off an RBI-single from Cepin to plate Kalush, who opened the inning with a double.

Fresno State added another run in the eighth inning off Mendonca's RBI. Muno walked with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mendonca then singled to right field to score him.

The teams concluded the two-game series tomorrow night at Beiden Field in Fresno. The game is schedule to begin at 6:05 PST.
