NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Freshman Kaylee Miller scored three goals, including the game-winner in the first extra frame, while junior goalkeeper Casey Hines recorded 10 saves and six steals to lead No. 11 UC Davis to a 6-5 overtime win over No. 15 Cal State Northridge in Big West Conference women's water polo action at Matador Pool Sunday.
The Aggies improve to 19-7 for the year and 2-0 in the inaugural Big West Conference season. The Matadors even their overall record to 14-14 and their conference ledger to 1-1.
Miller's goal capped a contest that featured five ties and a dramatic finish to regulation. UC Davis senior co-captain Lindsay Kiyama converted a go-ahead goal with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Aggies a 5-4 lead. However, CSUN drew an immediate exclusion in its subsequent possession. Before UC Davis could set up its five-man defense, Matador utility Sydney Sonoda hit the equalizer, forcing the overtime periods.
With 11 ticks remaining in the first three-minute overtime period, Miller netted a lob out of the reach of CSUN junior goalie Jillian Stapf, who had a season-high 20 saves for the game. Neither team managed to score in the second overtime, securing UC Davis with its winning 6-5 tally.
Five different Matador players tallied one goal each. Kiyama finished with two goals, while sophomore center Dakotah Mohr added one. Mohr's lone goal came in the opening minute of the third period, erasing Northridge's 3-2 halftime lead.
UC Davis continues its five-game Big West Conference schedule with home contests against UC Irvine and Long Beach State on April 4 and 5.
