Pacific Outslugs UC Davis To Take Big West Series

STOCKTON, Calif. - J.B. Brown drove in two runs off a double and a home run and scored a game-high three runs, and Pacific put up a combined nine runs in the first and sixth innings to earn an 11-7 victory and a Big West Conference baseball series win over UC Davis Saturday night at Klein Family Field. Along with combing to scored 18 runs, the two teams also combined for 27 hits, 13 of which went for extra bases.

The loss is the Aggies' fifth straight and drops them to 3-16 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Tigers win their first series over UC Davis since the 2006 season and improve to 9-12 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Junior Ty Kelly led the Aggies' offensive charge as he had game highs of two doubles and three hits along with two RBis. Senior Ryan Scoma added two hits and two RBIs, and was one of five Aggies to drive in runs during the contest. Sophomore Justin Schafer and redshirt freshman Tony Bongiovanni added solo home runs.

For Pacific, Brown finished with game highs of three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs. He also added a double and home run. Mike McKeever, Jamie Niley and Mike Walker also drove home two runs in the game. In addition, Niley pitched five innings and allowed only one earned run off four hits for the victory. Sophomore Scott Chew picked up the loss for the Aggies.

UC Davis gained its first lead of the series with three runs in the opening inning. Following a walk to Kelly and a single from senior Grant Hirneise with one out, junior Jared Thompson doubled to score Kelly from second base. Scoma then singled during the next at bat to plate Hirneise and Thompson.

The Tigers doubled the Aggies' score with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. The huge output was highlighted by an RBI-double from Brown, a two-run double from McKeever and a two-run homer from Walker.

The Aggies cut the deficit to one run with two more scores in the second inning. Both runs came off back-to-back home runs from Bongiovanni and Schafer.

The game stayed close for the next three innings with each team scoring single runs. Pacific scored in the third inning and Kelly doubled home a run for UC Davis in the fourth.

Pacific broke the game open with three runs in the sixth inning to jump ahead by a score of 10-6. Nick Longmire tripled in a run to highlight the inning. Brown hit a solo home run in the eighth put the Tigers up 11-6 heading into the ninth inning.

UC Davis tacked on its final run in the ninth behind another RBI-double from Kelly. Daniel Cepin tripled with one out before Kelly's double.
