BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - What was a one-run pitching duel through three innings turned into a UC Davis rout as the Aggies defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 9-0, Monday in a non-conference softball game at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. UC Davis scored three runs in the fourth and five more times in the fifth, which turned out to be the final inning. It was the fifth win in the last six games for UC Davis, which improved to 15-12 overall. CSUB fell to 16-14.
Marissa Araujo went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and four RBIs to help lead a 12-hit attack. Kelly Harman and Jessica Gonzalez each collected two hits as a total of eight Aggies had at least one hit on the day. Belinda Paine drove in two runs while Erin Emde, Harman and Gonzalez each had one. The 12 hits tied a season-high set Feb. 21 at Saint Mary's.
Araujo put UC Davis on the board in the second inning with a two-out double that drove in Sarah Axelson for a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way into the fourth when the Aggies scored three more runs. With one out and the bases loaded, Araujo singled to drive in Caitlin Low with the second run of the game. With two outs, Gonzalez added a run-scoring infield single before Paine drove in yet another run with a bases-loaded single.
Julie Stauder led off the fifth and was hit by a pitch. The senior quickly scored when Emde followed with an RBI-double to give the Aggies a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Harman delivered a run-scoring single before Araujo laced a two-run homer just inside the left field foul pole to make it 8-0. Bianca Castillo would score the ninth run on a fielder's choice.
Jessica Hancock picked up her 10th win of the season with four innings of work. She allowed six hits with one strikeout and no walks. Alex Holmes pitched a scoreless fifth.
UC Davis will conclude its latest road trip Tuesday with a doubleheader at Fresno State. The first game begins at 6 p.m., and both games can be heard on KDVS 90.3 FM and at www.ucdavisaggies.com.
