Gonzales Leads No. 5 Aztecs Past Aggies

March 15, 2009

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior utility Anna Gonzales scored four goals, including two in the fourth quarter, to help fifth-ranked San Diego State pull away to a 10-8 win over No. 12 UC Davis in non-conference collegaite women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies move to 15-7 for the season. The Aztecs improve to 17-4 overall.

Senior attacker Lindsay Kiyama led UC Davis with four goals, while sophomore center Dakotah Mohr provided two goals and a total of six drawn exclusions, giving her 17 for the Aggies' two-game weekend. Sophomore Rachelle Smith and freshman Kaylee Miller also scored goals to account for the balance of the UC Davis offense.

For SDSU, freshman driver Kimmy Keach added two scores while four other Aztec players each chipped in one. Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Campoli posted seven saves, including three against UC Davis 6-on-5 shots.

The Aggies took an early lead to the game, scoring in the opening minute when senior Sofia Patronas drew a five-meter exclusion and Kiyama scored the ensuing penalty shot. Gonzales equalized with a five-meter conversion of her own at the 5:06 mark, but UC Davis regained the lead on the next possession with Miller's successful 6-on-5 attempt.

The Aztecs scored three straight goals in the second period to craft a 4-2 lead, then Kiyama cut the lead to 4-3 with her man-up goal at 1:38. SDSU held that one-goal lead heading into the the halftime break, then extended its advantage to 6-3 behind back-to-back goals from the freshman Keach. However, UC Davis rebounded with a pair of goals in the final 1:06 in the third, again cutting the deficit to a single goal.

With a 6-5 edge heading into the fourth, Gonzales scored a natural goal at the 5:46 mark, then hit another soon after the Aggie defense returned to even strength, extended the Aztec lead back to three. UC Davis never approached closer than a two-goal margin after that point.

The Aggies break for the university's final examinations period, then returns to action as part of a home tripleheader with UC Santa Cruz and Harvard on Thursday, March 26.
