LA JOLLA, Calif. - Senior Ashley Chandler scored two goals in UC Davis' 9-7 win over 11th-ranked Loyola Marymount, then added a third goal in her team's 12-8 loss to No. 5 San Diego State, helping lead the No. 9 Aggies to a second-place finish at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational women's water polo tournament Sunday.
UC Davis, which has faced four teams ranked in the national top 10 during the young 2009 season, moves to 5-3 overall.
Chandler scored two goals in the third period of Sunday's morning win over LMU, helping the Aggies pull away from a 3-3 lock at the halftime break. Lion sophomore Diana Romero converted a 6-on-5 chance to cut the lead to 6-4, then UC Davis sophomore utility Michelle Hook returned the favor with a power-play goal with 0:52 in the period, pushing the Aggie advantage back to three.
In the tournament's championship game, Aztec senior Anna Gonzales scored three straight goals to help establish a 4-1 lead through eight minutes of play. Lindsay Kiyama and Rachelle Smith hit back-to-back scores to trim the edge to 4-3 with just under two minutes remaining in the half, then Gonzalez connected on her fourth goal at the 0:26 mark to put SDSU up by two at the break.
The Aztecs held at least a two-goal lead for the remainder of the game, avenging their 9-8 loss to UC Davis in last year's NCAA tournament. Sophomore Brooke Vessey converted a hat trick for SDSU, while sophomore Dakotah Mohr and freshman Carey Faber each had two goals to lead the Aggies.
Mohr and Chandler were UC Davis' leading scorers for the Triton Invite, each tallying six goals in the four games.
The Aggies return to action at Cal State Bakersfield's Roadrunner Invitational, taking on Concordia and Colorado State in Saturday's action, then the host `Runners and Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
