LA JOLLA, Calif. - Senior attacker Lindsay Kiyama scored on a counterattack with seven seconds remaining in overtime to lift ninth-ranked UC Davis to a 10-9 win over No. 19 UC San Diego in the robin-robin session of the Triton Invitational women's water polo tournament at Canyonview Aquatic Center Saturday.
The Aggies, who defeated Redlands earlier in the morning, improve to 4-2 for the season.
Kiyama's goal completed a long comeback effort from an 8-5 deficit through three quarters. Sophomore center Dakotah Mohr scored a goal early in the fourth to cut the Triton lead to two, then freshman Carey Faber halved that margin with a 6-on-5 goal with 1:24 remaining in regulation. Mohr then tied the game with a goal at the 0:33 mark, sending the game into overtime.
Neither team hit the back of the net in the first overtime, then senior Sofia Patronas converted at the 1:16 mark to give the Aggies the advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as UCSD's Bridgett Bugay hit the equalizer on the next possession with 0:57 on the clock. Kiyama then prevented the sudden-death period with her game-winner in the final seconds, converting a steal on two-meter defense then outracing the Triton defense for the finish.
Mohr and Kiyama each finished with two goals in the win over UCSD, continuing a season trend of balanced scoring. Senior Sydney Gstettenbauer scored a hat trick to lead the Tritons offensively.
In Saturday's opener, seven different Aggies each scored two goals in the 19-4 win over Redlands. UC Davis piled up a 10-3 lead at the break then scored seven unanswered in the third period to extend its edge to 17-3. Mohr and Kiyama each had two goals in that game as well, ending the day with four goals each for the tournament.
Claire Quinn and Sam Greenawalt each had two goals to account for the Bulldog offense.
The Aggies will face the winner of Saturday night's Long Beach State-Loyola Marymount game at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
