No. 7 Aggies Split Opening Day In Irvine

Feb. 21, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. - Sophomore utility Michelle Hook scored her first career hat trick as No. 7 UC Davis split its first-day action at the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament at Anteater Pool Saturday. The Aggies dropped a 9-6 morning battle to 10th-ranked Arizona State, then posted a 10-6 win over No. 19 UC Santa Barbara in their evening game.

The Aggies move to 10-4 for the year.

Freshman Ariel Feeney and sophomore Dakotah Mohr each scored two goals in the morning loss to the Aztecs. ASU sophomore Lynlee Smith, a member of the New Zealand national team, scored four goals to lead the Sun Devils, including three 6-on-5 conversions in a 5-2 first half. UC Davis fell behind by as much as 8-2 when Mariam Salloum hit her five-meter penalty shot, but Feeney and Mohr each hit 6-on-5 goals in a late comeback effort.

In the nightcap, UC Davis took a 4-2 lead late in the second period on freshman Kaylee Miller's man-up goal, but the Gauchos eventually fought back to a 5-5 tie midway through the third. However, Rachelle Smith scored the go-ahead with 3:14 in that frame to ignite a 4-0 Aggie run. Hook, who had scored a 6-on-5 goal in the second, hit back-to-back scores as part of UC Davis' game-winning stretch.

Smith, Miller and junior center Dana Nelsen each had two goals in the win over the Gauchos. Aggie junior goalkeeper Casey Hines posted eight saves in that game, giving her 14 for the day.

UC Davis opens Sunday's action against UC Irvine at 8 a.m. on the campus of Corona Del Mar High School, coincidentally the alma mater of Aggie junior Ashley Chandler. The winner of that game plays either Loyola Marymount or Cal State Northridge for ninth place in the tourney.

The UCI Invitational field comprises 16 nationally ranked teams, with UCSB being the only competitor not in the top 16.
