BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Sophomore attacker Rachelle Smith scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals to help seventh-ranked UC Davis hold on to a 7-6 win over No. 17 Cal State Bakersfield, then sophomore center Dakotah Mohr delivered four goals in a 16-8 win over Cal State East Bay, each helping the Aggies finish undefeated at the Roadrunner Invitational women's water polo tournament at Hillman Aquatics Center Sunday.
UC Davis, which went 4-0 at the tournament, improve to 9-3 for the season.
In Sunday morning's contest between the tournament's nationally ranked teams, both the Aggies and `Runners traded goals for three quarters, entering the fourth period in a 4-4 deadlock. Smith scored her first goal with 6:30 remaining in the final quarter, then senior Ashley Chandler converted a 6-on-5 chance after CSUB goalie Veronica Campbell had to vacate the cage on a major foul. Smith hit her second goal on the next possession, bringing the UC Davis lead to 7-4.
Roadrunners Alyson Moss and Petra Koudelkova each scored even-strength goals to close the gap to one goal, but the Aggies were able to protect the lead down the stretch.
UC Davis crafted a 4-1 lead early in Sunday's nightcap win against Cal State East Bay, then Pioneers Jenna Casady and Liz Warren cut the deficit to 4-3 early in the second period. Kiyama scored on a 6-on-5 in the final seconds of the first half to send the Aggies into the break with a two-goal lead, then her team piled up six scores in the third period - including three by Mohr - to stretch its edge to 11-6.
Mohr scored a game-high 14 goals in the four-game Roadrunner Invitational, exactly twice her previous season total.
The Aggies return to action on Saturday to compete in the UC Irvine Invitational, which annually draws the country's top-ranked teams. UC Davis will that tournament with Arizona State at 10:15 a.m.
