SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior Ashley Chandler and freshman Kaylee Miller each scored a total of three goals as UC Davis split its second-day action at the NorCal Cup women's water polo tournament at Santa Clara's Sullivan Aquatic Center Sunday. The No. 9 Aggies held on to a 10-9 victory over No. 10 San Jose State in their morning game, then battled back in a 9-7 loss to No. 5 California in their afternoon contest.
UC Davis opens its 2009 season at 2-2.
Chandler scored two goals in the opener against the Spartans, with eight other Aggies adding one apiece. Junior Casey Hines recored nine saves in net, playing all four quarters. UC Davis held a 5-3 lead at halftime but were outscored by a 4-1 margin in the third to fall behind by one.
Miller and fellow freshman Carey Faber each had two goals to lead five Aggie scorers in Sunday's nightcap against the Golden Bears. The two teams played an even 3-3 first quarter, but Cal shut UC Davis out in the second period to craft a 7-3 lead at the break. The Aggies managed to outscore the tournament co-host in the second half to close the final gap to two.
Hines posted three saves in the first half of work against Cal, then senior Diana Pivacek matched that total with two goals against in the final 16 minutes.
Chandler, Miller and Faber were the only UC Davis players to score a goal in each game.
The Aggies return to action on February 7-8 at the Triton Invitational. UC Davis is the top seed in that tournament, joining a round-robin pool with Redlands, Marist and host UC San Diego.
