KAHUKU, Hawaii - Demi Runas carded four birdies over her first 13 holes, sparking her to a 3-under 69 and a one-shot lead at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii, and helping the Aggies to an impressive six-shot lead after 36 holes.
The tournament features some of the top teams in the country, including No. 1 UCLA and two others in the top 10. Despite the high-powered field competing at the George Fazio Course at Turtle Bay Resort, the 27th-ranked Aggies continue to set the standard. UC Davis shot a 2-over 290 on Tuesday and remain the only squad in the 18-team tournament below par after two rounds. The Aggies are at 5-under 571 and lead 10th-ranked Cal by six shots.
UCLA and No. 8 USC are tied for third at 5-over 581, 10 shots behind UC Davis, while San Jose State is in fifth at 9-over 585.
Runas, a freshman from Torrance, gave UC Davis the individual leader for the second straight day after junior Alice Kim held the first-round lead after Monday. Runas, who had a 68 over her first 18 holes, started strong on Tuesday with a birdie at the par-4 1st hole. She parred the next seven before moving two shots in the red at the turn. A pair of birdies over the next four holes pushed her to four under before a bogey at the 15th hole gave one stroke back.
Runas leads 2009 All-Americans Stephanie Kono of UCLA and Lizette Salas of USC by one shot. She also headlines two UC Davis players in the top 12. Kim is in eighth place at 1-under 143 after her round of 76 while freshman Amy Simanton is tied for 11th at 1-over 145 after shooting a 71. Senior Kimberly Johnson is tied for 38th after her 80 put her at 8-over, and junior Chelsea Stelzmiller improved her first-day score by five shots, finishing with a 74 to move to 9-over 153 after two rounds and tie for 45th
Junior Katie Sisler, playing as an individual, shot 77 and is also tied for 45th.
Behind two birdies and a bogey, Simanton played the front nine on Tuesday one show below par, and then had one of each on the back to finish with her 71 on the 6,261-yard course. Stelzmiller was consistent throughout her second round, finishing with 14 pars.
UC Davis will look to retain its lead and capture its first tournament title since 2007 when it tees off its final round in Hawaii on Wednesday morning at 10:50 (Pacific). Teams will play the 6,361-yard Arnold Palmer Course at the resort during the last round.
