SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Luke Collins and freshman Colin Hicks each scored two goals to help 13th-ranked UC Davis take a 9-5 win over Fresno Pacific, saving a split during the first day of action at The Rodeo collegiate men's water polo tournament at Santa Clara's Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday. The Aggies previously lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to Western Water Polo Association opponent Air Force.
UC Davis moves to 11-11 for the season, and slips to 8-6 against conference opponents.
Collins was the Aggies' high scorer of the day, having scored one goal in the afternoon loss to Air Force. UC Davis never trailed in the win against FPU, crafting a 3-0 lead after the first period then holding a 4-2 advantage at halftime. Juniors Cory Lyle and Matt Richardson, sophomore Russell Hampton and freshmen Jared Clapham and Kevin Driscoll also scored against the Sunbirds.
In Saturday's opener, senior Alex Churnside scored in the second overtime to cap a run of four straight goals, lifting the Falcons to the comeback win. The Aggies held a 7-4 lead after three quarters, getting two goals from the lefty Richardson, but were held scoreless in the fourth period and six minutes of overtime.
Lyle and Collins added one goal each aginst Air Force, as did sophomore Ryan Hagens, junior Carlos Martinez and senior Brendan Sigourney.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Peat tallied nine saves in each contest.
UC Davis takes on 10th-ranked Concordia and Brown in Sunday's portion of the Rodeo tournament.
