DAVIS, Calif. - Seniors Kim Conley and Patrick Parsel claimed wide margins of victory in the women's 6-kilometer and men's 8K races, respectively, to lead UC Davis to convincing victories during the season-opening Aggie Open Saturday morning in the inaugural race at the newly-created Putah Creek Reserve Cross Country Course off County Road 98. It also marked the first meet for first-year UC Davis head caoch Drew Wartenburg.
The Aggie women boasted five of the top seven finishers to score an impressive 19 points, while the men owned five of the top nine for 22 points. Saint Mary's took second on the men's side with 54 points, and Sacramento State earned runners-up honors on the women's side with 54 points. Saint Mary's and Sonoma State rounded out the women's results. Sac State was the third finisher on the men's side.
"We wanted to come out and execute the race plan and hope the results would take care of themselves," said Wartenburg. "We came out the way we wanted to today."
Conley and Parsel won their respective races by substantial margins. Conley came across in 21:09.80, nearly 30 seconds ahead of teammate Kaitlin Gregg. Parsel crossed in 25:08.10 to finish exactly 12 seconds ahead of Saint Mary's Mario Mendoza.
"We were hoping someone would come on in the later stages of the race, jump on it and set a faster pace and today it happened to be Kim and Patrick," said Wartenburg. "There's really no surprise in those results. It's a good starting point for us and I was happy our freshmen got some good experience."
Along with Conley, the women packed together up front to get all five scorers in the top seven places. Gregg stayed behind Conley for a majority of the race to cross second in a time of 21:39.40. Freshmen Abbey Gallaher and Krista Drechsler finished 4th and 5th, respectively, in 21:55.20 and 21:56.40 to begin their Aggie careers in positive fashion. Junior Brianna Larson rounded out the Aggie scoring with a 7th-place time of 22:06.20.
Sophomore Caitlin Fitzgerald and freshman Kristin Arkin finished in the top 10 to give UC Davis seven of the top 10 runners.
The men also enjoyed a dominant performance in their race with six of the top 10 finishers. Junior Thomas Dileo finished 4th in a time of 25:28.40. The Aggies then claimed four of the next five spots, not counting Scott Himmelberger who was running unattached in the race. Sophomore Ben DeLand place 6th in 25:42.70 to lead the pack, and was followed by sophomore Calvin Thigpen in 8th (25:51.00), freshman Kindu Ejigu in 9th (25:51.70) and sophomore Arran Rogerson in 10th (25:55.80).
Tyler Rattray, Kyle Suarez, David Buscho and Federico Martinez placed 12th through 15th, respectively, to give the Aggies a total of 11 runners in the top 15.
UC Davis returns to action next Saturday with a trip across the causeway for the Hornet Invitational at 9 a.m.
