SEATTLE, Wash. - Seniors Kim Conley and Kaitlin Gregg posted top-10 finishes to lead the UC Davis women's cross country team to an impressive second-place finish in the six-kilometer race, while senior K.C. Cody paced the men's squad to a fourth-place showing in the 8K race during a rain-soaked Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park Saturday morning.
The women scored 67 points to finish second overall while the men tallied 102 points to place fourth. Host Washington, who was ranked third nationally on the women's side entering Saturday's race, swept both races.
Conley enjoyed the best finish of her career at the meet with a fifth-place time of 20:45. She was followed closely by Gregg, who placed eighth in 20:54. The top-10 finishers from each race recieved awards following competition.
Freshmen Kristin Arkin, Abbey Gallaher and Krista Drechsler rounded out the Aggie scoring in only their second collegiate 6K race. Arkin led the pack in 19th at 21:24 and was followed by Gallaher in 22nd (21:27) and Drechsler in 24th (21:38).
Junior Brianna Larson (30th) and sophomore Caitlin Fitzgerald (35th) were the Aggie displacers.
"We couldn't have asked for a better race from the women," said Aggie head coach Drew Wartenburg. "It's not at all surprising that our freshmen finished as well as they did. They've been working together and quickly learning. That will really help us down the stretch this season."
For the men, Cody returned for his first collegiate cross country race since 2006 to pace the team with an 11th-place time of 24:29. He was followed in the top 20 by fellow senior Patrick Parsel, who finished 20th in 24:39.
Junior Thomas Dileo was the next Aggie to cross in 34th place at 25 minutes even. Sophomore Calvin Thigpen finished 38th (25:02) and junior Scott Himmelberger was 42nd (25:07) to close the Aggie scoring.
Freshman Kindu Ejigu and junior Arran Rogerson were the displacers on the men's side.
"We definitely have some work to do, but the positive we take away from the men's race was that our top five finishers were just over 30 seconds apart," said Wartenburg. "We just need to work on finishing a little higher up. It was really good to see K.C. back as well."
UC Davis returns to competition next Saturday as they travel down to the Stanford Invite.
