SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sophomore Kyle Suarez paced the UC Davis men's cross country team to a second-place finish, while freshman Kristina Taylor led the women's squad to a sixth-place showing at Saturday's Hornet Jamboree at Granite Regional Park.

The Aggies, who used the race as a chance to get their younger runners some experience, placed second in the men's four-mile race with 52 points. Host Sacramento State won the men's race with 35 points. The Aggie women finished sixth overall in 5-kilometer race with 146 points. Santa Clara was the top women's team with 55 points.

"The challenge for this week was for some of our younger individuals to step up and lead the team during a race," said Aggie coach Drew Wartenburg. "We're going to count on some of these runners down the stretch of our season and wanted to get them in a race situation where they have to run up front and lead the team."

Suarez was the top Aggie finisher on the men's side with his seventh-place time of 20:19. He was followed in the top 10 by fellow sophomore Andrew Peabody, who finished ninth in 20:30. Sophomore David Buscho (20:40) and freshman Federico Martinez (20:45) finished 12th and 13th, respectively, to give the Aggies a total of four scorers in the top 15. Sophomore Tyler Rattray rounded out the scoring in 16th at 20:51.

"We sat nine guys today," said Wartenburg. "Sac State really ran well today and Kyle (Suarez) was able to mix it up in the front of the field. I was really pleased with our top five runners."

Taylor had the best showing of her young freshman season as she led the women's squad with an 11th-place finish in 18:06. With only six runners in the field, the Aggies packed up in the middle of the field to finish sixth overall.

Freshmen Chelsea Mumby (34th), Anna Smidebush (39th), Sam Kearney (51st) and Jennifer Norris (53rd) rounded out the scoring for the Aggies. Sophomore Alexia Burton finished 58th.

"We estenially ran an all freshman squad against three varsity teams," said Wartenburg. "Taylor looked very good today and had her nose in the mix up front for a majority of the race. It was good experience for the whole team."

The Aggies return to action with full squads next Saturday at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
