DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Chris Leer converted a cross from senior Quincy Amarikwa in the second minute and UC Davis held on to defeat Chico State 1-0 in an exhibition men's soccer match at Aggie Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies, who ranked 9th nationally in goals per game last season, scored the only goal of the game one minute and 20 seconds into the contest as Leer took a cross from Amarikwa on the right side of the box and put it past Wildcat goalkeeper Michael Koehane.
UC Davis outshot its opponent by a 15-10 margin, including a 13-3 advantage in the first half but failed to net another goal. The Wildcats held the shot advantage in the second half with seven to the Aggies' two. The Aggies also found the goal five times while the Wildcats managed only two shots on goal.
Sophomore Aggie goalkeeper Ryan McCowan helped secure the shutout with two saves while playing the entire 90 minutes. McCowan's first save came on a 1v1 late in the first half. Koehane finished with three saves for Chico State to keep the game close.
Leer tallied a game-high three shots as did Amarikwa and senior Ian Conklin. Seniors Ahmad Haitife and Dylan Curtis each finished with two shots.
The game marked the return of long-time Aggie assistant coach and player Felipe Restrepo, who became Chico States' head coach in the spring.
In addition to holding an advantage in shots, the Aggies also managed nine corner kicks to the Wildcats' three.
UC Davis officially opens its season next weekend by hosting (along with Sacramento State) two games in the Copa de Causeway Classico. The Aggies open with Long Island Friday at 5 p.m. before hosting Cal State Bakersfield Sunday at noon.
