NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Jessica Hancock threw a complete-game shutout as UC Davis defeated Cal State Northridge, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Matador Diamond. The game was the first of a Big West Conference doubleheader between the two teams. Erin Emde had an RBI-single in the sixth inning, which led to both runs of the game. The win improves UC Davis to 24-34 on the year and 9-10 in the Big West. CSUN dropped to 21-24 and 10-9, respectively.
Hancock retired the first seven batters she faced before allowing a one-out single in the third. That base runner was quickly erased on an inning-ending double play. In the fourth, Cal State Northridge threatened again with runners at second and third and two outs. Hancock promptly struck out Jackie Duree to end the inning. The Matadors stranded yet another runner in scoring position in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Jessica Gonzalez led off and was hit by a pitch before Julie Stauder singled to put runners on first and second for the Aggies. Deanna Menapace followed with a sacrifice to advance the runners to second and third. That set the stage for Emde's single to left, which drove in Gonzalez. An error on the same play also allowed Stauder to score to make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Amanda Peek and Micah Putnam led off with consecutive singles. However, Hancock maneuvered out of trouble with a force-out, flyout and groundout to end the inning. The junior retired the side in order in the seventh to clinch the victory.
Hancock scattered six hits to go along with five strikeouts. She did not walk a batter. It was her fifth shutout of the season.
