Wright Reaches 20-Win Plateau For 10th Straight Year

April 6, 2008

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior Laura Uribe and freshman Dakotah Mohr each scored two goals as 10th-ranked UC Davis escaped an early 4-3 deficit to post a 12-7 win over Cal State Bakersfield in the final game of the 28th Aggie Shootout women's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday. The Aggies finished 4-0 at their annual tournament, earning a 12-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino in Sunday's opener.

UC Davis improves to 21-8 for the year, delivering head coach Jamey Wright his 10th-straight 20-win season, and 11-1 against teams of the Western Water Polo Association.

The Roadrunners drew first blood in the Sunday finale, scoring on a Becky Seelos at the 5:50 mark in the first period. Uribe helped the Aggies regain the lead, first on an assist to Jessica Soza at 3:53, then by converting a five-meter penalty shot (drawn by senior Christi Raycraft) less than 30 seconds later. But Cal State Bakersfield held the lead after the first period as junior 2-meter Amanda Ortiz lofted a short lob into the Aggie cage, putting her team up by a 4-3 advantage.

UC Davis responded in the second period, outscoring the 'Runners by a 5-1 margin. Senior Mary Lowe scored at 4:56 to tie the game at 5-5, then Raycraft's successful 6-on-5 conversion put the Aggies on top, 6-5. Sophomore Dana Nelsen nudged the lead to two goals with her score at the 1:19 mark. The Aggies earned a major break in the final seconds when Ortiz, the nation's leading scorer, fouled out of the game. Sophomore Ashley Chandler hit the extra-man goal to send the Aggies into halftime with an 8-5 lead.

Mohr had both of her goals in the second half and UC Davis held the Roadrunners to just one 6-on-5 goal in four opportunities, preserving the tournament sweep.

Ortiz finished the game with three goals in her 15 minutes of play. Bakersfield's junior goalkeeper, Veronica Campbell, recorded 12 saves in net.

Earlier in Sunday's Aggie action, junior Lindsay Kiyama scored three goals while seniors Uribe, Ashley Greenwood and Casie Mota each had two in UC Davis' 12-6 win over Cal State San Bernardino. Mota earned both of her goals on 6-on-5 opportunities, among the Aggies' five such scores in the game.

UC Davis returns to action with a home game against No. 16 Santa Clara on Saturday, April 12.
