DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis defeated Cal State Fullerton, 7-0, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. Kaitlin Callan and Robin Guier each posted come-from-behind victories in singles in their final action at home. Overall, the Aggies won all three doubles matches as well as the six singles matches. The win improves UC Davis to 11-7 overall and 2-2 in the Big West Conference.
Doubles wins for the Aggies included Anita Athavale and Desiree Stone over Karina Akhmedova and Shelly Injejikian, 8-3, at No. 1. Jenna Kappel and Herzyl Legaspi posted an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Jerusha Cruz and Erin Wiesner. Guier teamed with Emma Shapiro for another UC Davis win at No. 3.
UC Davis took a 2-0 lead when Stone defeated Wiesner at No. 1. The Titan retired with Stone leading 3-0 in the first set. Next to finish was Shapiro, who blanked Cruz, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 to put UC Davis up 3-0. Sidney Brady clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lani Agsalud at No. 6.
At no. 3, Legaspi picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Akhmedova, and the only results still in doubt were those of the seniors. Both Callan and Guier were down a set in their matches at No. 5 and No. 2, respectively. The two rallied for second set victories and both took their opponents to a decisive super-tiebreaker.
Callan was the first to finish with a 10-8 win in her super-tiebreaker against Andrews. Guier followed with a 10-1 super-tiebreaker victory against Injejikian to account for the final point of the day for UC Davis.
"It was nice to see Robin and Kaitlin win their final matches at home,' said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "It was a great way for them to end their home career at UC Davis."
Cal State Fullerton dropped to 3-16 overall and 0-7 in the Big West.
UC Davis will close out its regular season with four road matches. The stretch begins Friday at UC Santa Barbara.
