DAVIS, Calif. - UC Irvine defeated UC Davis, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference women's tennis match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The No. 53 Anteaters won the doubles point before taking five out of six in singles. The Aggies' lone point came from Desiree Stone, who picked up her fourth straight win and 11th in her past 13 outings. The win drops UC Davis to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big West.
UC Irvine (11-7, 5-1 Big West) swept all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The first duo to finish was Clare Fermin and Rebecca Kwan at No. 2 with an 8-3 victory over Anita Athavale and Stone. The Anteaters clinched the doubles point when Jessica Broadfoot and Lisa Shih posted an 8-4 win over Robin Guier and Emma Shapiro. The final doubles match went to UC Irvine as Inna Agababian and Becky Bernhard outlasted Herzyl Legaspi and Randi Schuler, 9-8 (4).
In singles, the Aggies tied the match when Stone was the first to finish on court 2. The sophomore defeated Agababian, 6-3, 6-3, to even the overall score at 1-1. The Anteaters then proceeded to win the final five matches.
Bernhard put UCI up 2-1 with a straight sets victory over Schuler at No. 1. Kwan followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Shapiro to give UCI a 3-1 lead. The clinching point came at No. 6 where Broadfoot defeated Sidney Brady, 7-5, 6-1. The final two wins for UC Irvine went to Fermin and Brooke Bartlett at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
UC Davis is next in action Sunday when it hosts Cal State Fullerton at 10 a.m. The match is also part of senior day for the Aggies. Both Guier and Kaitlin Callan represent this year's senior class.
