Senior center Laura Uribe scored a game-high four goals while attacker Mary Lowe added two to lead 10th-ranked UC Davis to a 9-7 win over 11th-ranked Loyola Marymount in Saturday's sixth game of the Aggie Shootout women's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center. The Aggies also won their earlier game in the tourney, posting a 14-4 victory over Cal State East Bay.
UC Davis improves to 19-8 for the season and 9-1 against members of the Western Water Polo Association. The Lions snap their 10-game winning streak, dropping to 15-9 overall.
Uribe hit two first-quarter goals to help UC Davis crack open a 3-0 lead, but former Aggie Crisara Abrams quickly scored two goals midway in the second period to help LMU re-tie the game at 3-3. UC Davis senior Christi Raycraft and Abrams traded goals to put the scoreboard at 4-4, then Uribe hit a bomb from well beyond mid-tank at the halftime buzzer to put the Aggies up by 5-4 at the break.
The Lions briefly took the lead in the third quarter, first equalizing the score on Diana Romero's extra-man goal at the 5:57 mark, then on Mary Ann Campos' successful five-meter penalty shot less than 30 seconds later. But Lowe and Uribe delivered later in the frame to put UC Davis back on top by a 7-6 margin with 2:17 remaining in the third.
LMU driver Daisy Fish scored with 1:11 left in the third period to tie the score at 7-7, but the Lions never managed to score again despite three 6-on-5 opportunities in the final quarter. Meanwhile, junior Lindsay Kiyama scored a man-up goal early in the third and Lowe buried her second shot to seal the win for the Aggies.
Raycraft scored four goals in UC Davis' opener against CSUEB, including three in her team's 7-0 run in the first quarter. Reserve center Lauren Seidemann performed a natural hat trick in the third period, scoring all three goals in a span of less than four minutes.
UC Davis concludes play in the Aggie Shootout on Sunday with games against Cal State San Bernardino (8 a.m.) and Cal State Bakersfield (5:15 p.m.)
