DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis showed no signs of rust in its first match in 22 days as the Aggies blanked Portland, 7-0, in a non-conference women's tennis match, Thursday, at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The win was the third straight for UC Davis, which improved to 10-6 on the year. The victory also snapped Portland's seven-match winning streak as the Pilots dropped to 12-7.
The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead as a result of a sweep in doubles. The first to finish was the duo of Robin Guier and Emma Shapiro. The Aggies overcame a 4-1 deficit at No. 3 to defeat Anna Gullickson and Audree Jenks, 8-6. Desiree Stone and Anita Athavale followed with an 8-3 win over Stefanie Doolittle and Jenna Tanzer at No. 2. Randi Schuler and Herzyl Legaspi also posted a win at No. 1.
UC Davis had an equal amount of success in singles. Schuler was the first to finish as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 against Megan Sporndli. Stone gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead when she defeated Lindsey Griffin at No. 2, 6-3, 6-0. The Aggies clinched the match with their fourth point as a result of Sidney Brady's straight-sets victory at No. 6. The freshman posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jenks.
The final three points for the Aggies came from Legaspi. Guier and Shapiro. Legaspi posted a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Gullickson at No. 4. Guier outlasted Tanzer, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3 while Shapiro fought off a first-set loss to defeat Doolittle at No. 5, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
UC Davis has won six of its past seven matches and is 9-3 since Feb. 8. The Aggies return to Big West play Saturday when they host No. 53 UC Irvine at 11 a.m.
