INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Cal State Northridge, 4-2, Friday afternoon in a Big West Conference Championship quarterfinal match at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Randi Schuler and Robin Guier each picked up wins for the Aggies who had a rally in singles fall short. Cal State Northridge (14-7) built a 3-0 lead before UC Davis (11-12) pulled to within 3-2.
The match started with the Matadors winning two doubles contests to take the early 1-0 lead. Brooke Doane and Kankey Koichumanova defeated Herzyl Legaspi and Randi Schuler, 8-3, at No. 1. The next match to finish also went to CSUN as Canna Furuta and Nina Jaworowski topped Guier and Emma Shapiro at No. 3, 8-5.
In singles, the Matadors won the first two matches that finished to lead 3-0. Doane started things at No. 5 with a straight sets victory over Shapiro at No. 5. Koichumanova followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Desiree Stone at No. 2 to make it 3-0.
The next two matches to go official also finished in straight sets but went to the Aggies. Schuler put the finishing touches on a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Victoria Brymer at No. 1 to pull UC Davis within 3-1. Next to finish was Guier, as the UC Davis senior disposed of Furuta, 7-5, 6-4, to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Cal State Northridge would clinch the win when Jaworowski posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 victory over Kaitlin Callan at No. 6.
