Spartans Sweep Aggies In Wednesday Doubleheader

Box Score

April 16, 2008

San Jose State 2, UC Davis 1 (Game 1)
San Jose State 10, UC Davis 1 (Game 2)

SAN JOSE, Calif - UC Davis was swept by San Jose State in a non-conference softball doubleheader, Wednesday afternoon, at SJSU Field. The host Spartans held on for a 2-1 victory in the first game before defeating the Aggies, 10-1, in the second game in five innings. Deanna Menapace went 3-for-6 on the afternoon for the Aggies, and Julie Stauder collected two hits. Lindsey Jones and Tracy Dean each drove in a run.

In the first game, San Jose State (23-25) scored twice in the bottom of the first before UC Davis (18-29) responded with a run in the second. Menapace and Ashley Johnson started the inning with singles, and Sarah O'Neill drew a one-out walk to load the bases. After a fly-out, Jones delivered a two-out single to drive in Menapace and make it 2-1. As it turns out, that would we the last of the scoring as SJSU hurler Deanna Mauer allowed just two hits in the final five innings.

Both teams finished the first game with six hits each. Jessica Hancock suffered the hard-luck loss for the Aggies as she surrendered just one earned run while striking out three with two walks.

San Jose State did most of its damage in the second game in the second inning. The Spartans entered the frame with a 1-0 lead before scoring eight more times in the inning. In all, six of the Spartans' 10 runs were unearned.

Stauder and Menapace accounted for the Aggies' two hits of the second game. Jones scored the only run for UC Davis in the fifth inning when she came around to score on a groundout by Dean with one out.

Wednesday's doubleheader ends an eight-game road stretch for UC Davis, which is next in action Saturday when it begins a three-game series with UC Riverside at La Rue Field. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
