STANFORD, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by No. 4 Stanford, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference women's tennis match at the Taube Tennis Center. The Cardinal swept doubles to take an early 1-0 lead before winning all six in singles. It marks the seventh time this season UC Davis (11-10) has faced a nationally-ranked team. Stanford won its sixth straight match and improved to 18-4.
In doubles, the 45th-ranked duo of Whitney Deason and Jessica Nguyen was the first to finish at No. 2 with an 8-1 victory over Robin Guier and Emma Shapiro. Stanford clinched the doubles point with a victory at No. 3 as Celia Durkin and Carolyn McVeigh downed Jessica Harris and Andrea Phillips, 8-2. The final doubles match to finish was on court 1 as Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette, ranked No. 12, defeated Anita Athavale and Herzyl Legaspi, 8-3.
In singles, Deason defeated Shapiro, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 to put Stanford up 2-0. Moments later, Barte made it 3-0 when she posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Guier at No. 1. At No. 5, Jennifer Yen clinched the win for Stanford when she defeated Harris, 6-2, 6-3.
The final three matches in singles also went to the Cardinal. Burdette was next to finish on court 2 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Legaspi. Four minutes later, McVeigh outlasted Kaitlin Callan, 6-1, 6-2. The final match to finish was at No. 6 as Lejla Hodzic defeated Sidney Brady, 6-3, 6-4.
Stanford's top four singles all entered the match with national rankings. Barte is No. 7 while Deason is No. 58. McVeigh is No. 78 in the latest rankings, and Burdette tops out at No. 100. The Aggies' No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone, were unavailable for the match.
UC Davis closes out its regular season Friday at No. 70 Nevada.
