SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Cal Poly, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference women's tennis match at the Mustang Courts. Desiree Stone continued her hot hand for the Aggies with her seventh consecutive victory, but the Mustangs prevailed by winning he doubles point and taking four more in singles. The loss drops UC Davis to 11-9 overall and 3-5 in the Big West.
In doubles, Diana Filip and Amy Markoff started things for Cal Poly (11-10, 4-3 Big West) by winning at No. 3 over Robin Guier and Emma Shapiro, 8-3. The Mustangs clinched the point when Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong defeated Legaspi and Randi Schuler, 8-5, at No. 1. Anita Athavale and Stone accounted for the lone doubles win for UC Davis as they defeated Shannon Brady and Maria Malec, 8-7(1) at No. 2.
In singles, the Mustangs went up 2-0 as Malec defeated Kaitlin Callan, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6. The lead increased to 3-0 as Markoff posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Shapiro at No. 5. The Mustangs clinched the victory in the next match to finish when Blalock defeated Schuler, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1. Cal Poly's final point, which gave it a 5-0 lead, came by virtue of a win by Whitney Peterson at No. 3.
The final two matches went to the Aggies as Stone and Legaspi both posted victories. Stone finished first after a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Wong at No. 2. The match finished as Legaspi defeated Brady, 7-6(3), 7-5, at No. 4.
Saturday's match was the Big West finale for UC Davis. The Aggies conclude their regular season next week with matches at No. 3 Stanford and at No. 65 Nevada.
