April 1, 2008

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Ty Kelly, Jake Jefferies and Scott Heylman each drove in two runs and UC Davis used a four-run eighth inning to defeat Sacramento State, 10-5, in a Causeway Cup baseball game at Hornet Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Aggies have now won four straight games and 12 of their last 13 to improve to 18-8 overall. The loss snaps the Hornets' five-game winning streak and drops them to 10-15 overall. This marks the fifth straight game the Aggies have won against the Hornets.

"They're our crosstown rival, and you always want to get the win," said Aggie coach Rex Peters. "Having had success against them in the past also gives us confidence coming into the game. Our pitching depth came through today and helped us get the win."

With the score tied at 4-4 through the seventh inning, UC Davis scored four runs in the eighth to claim the lead for good. Jefferies highlighted the big inning with a two-run single to right field.

All nine Aggie starters recorded at least one hit in the game and five different batters had multiple hits. Kelly, Jefferies and Heylman each had two RBI's to pace the Aggies' offense. Kelly and Heylman each finished with two hits and scored two runs. Heylman also had a double.

Ryan Royster, Kyle Mihaylo and Evan Hudson accounted for the other Aggie RBI's. Royster had a game-high three hits and scored a run while Hudson had two hits and a run scored.

Andy Suiter earned his first collegiate victory with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings while Justin Fitzgerald recorded his team-leading fifth save of the season by shutting out the Hornets through the final 1.1 innings. The Aggies threw a total of five pitchers in the win.

David Flores was a triple away from the cycle for Sac State as he went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run homer. A total of six Hornets pitched in the game. Ryan Magee gave up four runs in the eighth inning to get the loss.

UC Davis jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the second and third innings. The Aggies' first run came off a Mihaylo single to score Hudson from third base. Hudson reached base on an error by the shortstop to start the inning. The next Aggie run was also unearned. Kelly was walked to open the second inning and scored the run on a balk and two wild pitches.

Sac State tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of third inning. They took the lead in the fifth inning off Flores' two-run shot to left field.

The Hornet lead did not last long as the Aggies tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning. The Aggies started the inning with a double from James, a single from Matt Dempsey and an RBI single from Heylman. Kelly drove home Dempsey two at bats later to cap the scoring.

UC Davis jumped out to its biggest lead of the game with a four-run eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Kelly was walked to bring in the first run. Jefferies singled to right field to drive in two more and the final run was scored off a Hudson single to left field.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the eighth, UC Davis tacked on two more runs in the ninth off Heylman's double to center field. Fitzgerald pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the victory.

The game featured a combined eight wild pitches. The Hornets also committed four errors and hit four batters.

UC Davis will travel to Pullman, Wash. this weekend for a four-game series with Washington State. The first game on Friday will begin at 5:30 p.m.
