RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Davis evened its Big West Conference record with a 5-2 win over UC Riverside Saturday in a women's tennis match in Riverside. The Aggies won the doubles point before claiming four wins in singles. The victory improves UC Davis to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big West. Kaitlin Callan won what turned out to be the clinching match for the Aggies.
Randi Schuler and Herzyl Legaspi won the first doubles match to finish with an 8-4 victory over Angelique Corpuz and Erynne Oki at No. 1. The Aggies clinched the doubles point when Robin Guier and Emma Shapiro posted the same result at No. 3 over Nadia Sakhakorn and Yasaman Sakhakorn. UC Riverside (5-6, 0-3 Big West) won the other doubles match.
The first two singles matches to finish went to the Aggies in straight sets. At No. 1, Schuler defeated Oki, 6-3, 6-1, to put UC Davis up 2-0. The lead expanded to three points when Stone defeated Donna McCullough, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. The Highlanders won their first point when Nadia Sakhakorn posted a victory at No. 4 to make it 3-1.
The Aggies clinched the win when Callan defeated Roxanne Plata, 6-4, 7-6 (3), at No. 6 to give the team a 4-1 lead. The final victory of the day came from Guier at No. 2.
UC Davis is next in action Wednesday when it plays at Santa Clara.
