LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Redshirt freshman Rachelle Smith scored a total of three goals to lead seventh-ranked UC Davis to two wins at the Loyola Marymount Invitational women's water polo tournament at Burns Recreation & Aquatics Center Friday. The Aggies beat No. 15 UC San Diego, 5-4, then defeated Santa Clara in an 8-5 nightcap.
UC Davis, the highest-ranked team at the tournament, improves to 12-6 overall and moves to 4-0 against members of the Western Water Polo Association.
Senior attacker Casie Mota scored two goals in the evening win over the Broncos, helping the Aggies craft a 6-1 lead at the halftime break. Her second goal put UC Davis up by 7-1 before SCU staged a mild comeback to climb back to a 7-4 deficit with 1:50 remaining in the fourth. Smith answered with a goal at the 1:28 mark to effectively seal the win.
In Friday's early game against UCSD, Smith scored two goals in the second period to help UC Davis take a 3-1 lead at halftime. Triton sophomore closed the gap to a single goal early in the third, then senior hole set Judy Emaus tied the game at 3-3 with 5:26 left in the frame.
UCSD junior Sydney Gstettenbauer put her team up by one with her successful 6-on-5 goal with 2:29 left in the third, but that closed out the Triton scoring. Laura Uribe hit a five-meter penalty shot at 2:08 to tie the game at 4-4, then Greenwood scored the game-winner just 21 seconds later.
The Aggies held off four extra-man opportunities in the fourth quarter to protect the lead and the victory.
UC Davis concludes action at the LMU Invite with two more WWPA matchups on Saturday. The Aggies open with Colorado State at 8:30 a.m. then face the host Lions at noon.
