DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior center Ashley Greenwood scored a 6-on-5 goal midway through the third period to help 10th-ranked UC Davis recover from a 2-1 halftime deficit in a 4-3 win over No. 14 Hartwick in the first of three collegiate women's water polo games at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday. The Aggies later defeated UC Santa Cruz, 20-7, in a Western Water Polo Association matchup in the day's finale.
With the sweep, UC Davis improves to 16-8. The Hawks move to 14-9 after the split, while the Banana Slugs dip to 10-15 overall.
Aggie senior Christi Raycraft also scored an extra-man goal in the fourth quarter while posting two key field blocks in the final minutes to help preserve the win. Senior Mary Lowe put UC Davis on the scoreboard in the first quarter, then senior center Laura Uribe scored on a skip shot early in the third to tie the game at 2-2. Greenwodo hit her go-ahead goal less than two minutes later to put the Aggies up by a 3-2 edge.
Raycraft's goal increased the lead to 4-2, but the Hawks pulled back to within one when senior Kaitlin Leonard delivered a long pass to freshman Jessica McKee, who promptly redirected the ball into the Aggie net. However, UC Davis' defense took over in the final minutes of play. Senior Jessica Soza had a steal on a Hartwick counterattack, then Raycraft blocked back-to-back shot attempts by Leonard.
In the Aggies' nightcap, freshman center Lauren Seidemann shot 4-for-4 with a steal in the fourth quarter to lead 13 different UC Davis scorers. Senior Madeline Stephenson performed her first hat trick of the year, while Raycraft and Uribe each added a pair of goals. Coincidentally, UC Santa Cruz was led by a former Aggie: sophomore Nila Ward notched three goals to lead the Slug scorers.
UC Davis was particularly effective in 6-on-5 situations during the two Saturday games. The Aggies shot 2-for-4 in the win over Hartwick, plus Lowe's goal, which occurred shortly after a 20-second exclusion had expired. In the UCSC win, UC Davis shot 7-for-12, plus Uribe's five-meter penalty shot in the third.
Hartwick and UC Santa Cruz also squared off for a neutral-site game in between the two UC Davis contests. Freshman Jessica McKee scored five goals and Megan Dahl-Smith added three to lead the Hawks to a 15-7 win over the Slugs. Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Dorman posted 14 saves in the `Wick cage. For UCSC, Heather Stewart, Chelsea Meyers and Jaisy Hanson each had two goals.
UC Davis returns to action on April 4 for a home game against Colorado State, a prelude to the 28th annual Aggie Shootout tournament.
