LA JOLLA, Calif. - Six different Aggies scored two goals each in an 18-5 win over Redlands then senior attacker Christi Raycraft posted a team-high three goals in an 8-6 loss to No. 16 UC Santa Barbara as UC Davis split games during the first day of action at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational at the Canyonview Aquatics Center Saturday.
The eighth-ranked Aggies move to 4-2 for the season.
Senior Casie Mota scored two goals as part of UC Davis' 7-1 start against the Bulldogs. Ashley Chandler, Lindsay Kiyama and Mary Lowe also had two scores in the first half. Rachelle Smith and Jessica Soza also added a pair of goals in the win, which saw the Aggies tally a season-best offensive showing.
In Saturday's nightcap, Gaucho utility Gillian Morgan fired a game-high four goals to help her team forge its second Group D upset of the day. UCSB had nipped Hartwick, 16-15, earlier in the day. Morgan had both Gaucho goals in the first, then completed her hat trick in the second period to lead her team to a 4-2 edge at the halftime break. Kiyama and Raycraft each had goals in the first half, then Soza tacked on the Aggies' third score with a minute remaining in the third.
Raycraft opened the fourth with a goal to cut the UCSB lead to 6-4, then freshman Dakotah Mohr trimmed the margin to 6-5 with her strike at 4:39. Morgan scored her fourth goal to bump the Gauchos back up by two, then Raycraft responded with her third score, bringing the Aggies to within a 7-6 deficit. UCSB junior Amanda Tipton brought the tally to its final of 8-6, and the two teams battled to a scoreless two minutes to finish the contest.
UC Davis opens Sunday's action against Cal State Northridge at 8 a.m. in the West Pool, then will take on UC San Diego or Long Beach State in either the fifth-place or seventh-place game later in the afternoon.
