DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over visiting San Francisco Friday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The match was the home opener for the Aggies, who improved to 1-3 on the year. UC Davis won the doubles point and claimed three more points in singles to clinch the win. Robin Guier, Desiree Stone and Herzyl Legaspi each won in singles for the Aggies.
In doubles, Anita Athavale and Stone teamed at No. 3 to win the first match that finished by defeating Jessy Mekpoh and Sarah Oudomvilay, 8-1. The Dons evened things at No. 1 when Jennifer-Lee Heinser and Emma Taylor prevailed, 8-2, over Guier and Randi Schuler. The clinching match in doubles came down to No. 2 where Jenna Kappel and Legaspi defeated Cecelia Gratian and Jenny Sperry, 8-2.
In singles, USF (2-3) tied the match at 1-1 when Heinser defeated Schuler at No. 1. The Aggies regained the lead when Guier defeated Taylor, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2. The advantage increased to 3-1 as Stone posted a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win at No. 3 over Gratian.
The Dons pulled within 3-2 when Oudomvilay defeated Kaitlin Callan, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, at No. 5. The next match to finish proved to be the clincher on the day. Legaspi was taking on Sperry at No. 4 and outlasted the Don, 6-4, 7-5. The win put the Aggies in front 4-2 and gave them their first victory of the season.
"It's nice to get a win over USF," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "I was really impressed with our team and Herzyl in particular. That was a great win by her. It was also nice to see Robin Guier get a win. She played a good match today."
Friday's match starts a stretch of three straight and eight of nine at home for UC Davis. The Aggies next face San Jose State Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
