DAVIS, Calif. - Long Beach State defeated UC Davis, 63-52, Thursday night in a Big West Conference men's basketball game at The Pavilion. The 49ers scored the first 11 points of the game and never trailed. David Carter led UC Davis (8-14, 2-7 Big West) with 17 points, and Vince Oliver added 10. LBSU's Donovan Morris led all scorers with 26.
Long Beach State (5-16, 2-7 Big West) held UC Davis scoreless for nearly eight minutes to start the game before Carter made a jumper at the 12:11 mark. The Aggies were able to get within 18-11 with 6:15 left in the half after a Dominic Calegari jumper. The 49ers followed with a 14-6 run to close the half with a 32-17 lead.
UC Davis was not able to put together a run to start the second half as LBSU opened up a 46-25 lead with 14:20 left in the game. On the Aggies' next possession, Kyle Brucculeri made a three-pointer from the right side, and a layup by Carter less than two minutes later cut the advantage to 46-31. The 49ers responded with a 7-2 run, pushing the lead back to 53-33 with just under 10 minutes left in the game.
That's when the Aggies put together an 8-0 run in an effort to get back into the game. It started on a pair of free throws by Calegari, who finished with seven points. Carter made a spinning layup and then a jumper from the right side on the next possession to give UC Davis six straight points. With 7:20 left in the game, Payne's fast-break layup completed the run and pulled the Aggies within 12. UC Davis would not get much closer than that the rest of the way as Long Beach State never let the lead get into the single digits.
For the game, the 49ers shot 47 percent while UC Davis shot 42 percent. Morris went 10-for-16 from the field. Long Beach State outrebounded UC Davis, 33-23. Morris led the 49ers with nine rebounds, and Shane Hanson led UC Davis with nine boards to go along with six points.
Morris was the only 49er to score in double figures.
UC Davis completes its three-game homestand Saturday when it hosts Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m.
