DAVIS, Calif. - Jessica Lewis scored two goals on Friday afternoon, Lauren Machanis made eight saves in goal and No. 11 UC Irvine broke a 6-6 tie with two fourth-quarter goals as the Anteaters held off No. 6 UC Davis 8-7 in a nonconference women's water polo match at Schaal Aquatics Center.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 9-6 overall while UC Irvine improved to 8-5. Lindsay Kiyama had two scores for UC Davis while five other Aggies had one each. The Anteaters took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and the teams matched each other with two scores each over each of the final three periods.
Kiyama scored just over a minute into the fourth quarter for UC Davis to tie the game 6-6, but Lewis answered with her second goal just 18 seconds later and Sarah Frost later made it 8-6 midway through the period. Mary Lowe brought the Aggies back to within one with her score with 2 minutes, 31 seconds to go and UC Davis had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but could not find the back of the net.
The teams battled without a score in the game's early going before Jessica Soza's goal got the Aggies on the board first with just under two minutes remaining in the first. However, UC Irvine struck fast picking up goals from Kat Plummer and Alli Russell - the latter coming with just three ticks on the clock - to go up 2-1 heading into the second.
Freshman Dakotah Mohr tied it for the Aggies 30 seconds into the second quarter but Erin Kiene and Nicole Flacco scored back-to-back goals for the Anteaters to make it 4-2 midway through the period. Casie Mota's goal with 2:29 to go brought UC Davis to within 4-3 at halftime. Trailing 6-4, the Aggies picked up a player-up goal from Kiyama late in the third before her score early in the fourth tied it, setting up the tight final period.
UC Davis returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Long Beach State at 11 a.m. at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
