DAVIS, Calif - UC Davis split a doubleheader with Sacramento State Wednesday afternoon at La Rue Field. The Aggies defeated the Hornets, 6-1, in the first game before Sacramento State countered with a 6-0 win in game two. Jessica Hancock fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and won her fourth straight start for the Aggies. Trish Paine went 4-for-6 on the day, and Julie Stauder had two hits and drove in two runs for UC Davis.
The first game was scoreless into the third inning before UC Davis (9-7) broke through for three runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and Bianca Castillo at third, Paine delivered a run-scoring single to make it 1-0. After a single by Stauder, Paine scored on a double-steal to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead. Deanna Menapace came up with the third Aggies' hit of the inning and drove in Stauder with the third run.
In the fifth inning, UC Davis plated two more runs on a two-run single by Stauder that drove in Michelle Espiritu and Paine. Ashley Johnson added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to put the Aggies in front 6-0.
In the circle, Hancock was dominant. She did not allow an earned run while walking just two. Both hits by the Hornets were singles as Hancock faced just four batters over the minimum of 21 for the game. With the win, the junior improved to 6-3.
"Jessica's on fire right now," said UC Davis head coach Karen Yoder. "She has great command of her pitches. She had an amazing day in the circle."
In game two, Sacramento State (5-5) outhit UC Davis, 7-4. Two of those were home runs by Jamie Schloredt. She hit a solo shot in the fifth to make it 2-0 and added a grand slam in the seventh. She finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
Paine had two of the Aggies' hits in the second game while Espiritu and Sarah Axelson each had one. Erin Emde also had a multiple-hit day for the Aggies by going 2-for-3 in the first game.
UC Davis is next in action at the Worth Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The tournament runs Friday through Sunday, and the Aggies will play a total of five games. Friday's opponents are St. John's and Purdue.
