IRVINE, Calif. - Senior center Laura Uribe totalled four goals in two games as No. 11 UC Davis defeated No. 7 San Jose State, 7-6, then lost to No. 4 Hawai'i by a 6-5 final in the fifth-place game of the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament at Anteater Pool Sunday.
The Aggies move to 9-5 for the season. The 16-team UCI Invite stands as one of the toughest tournament fields during the year, featuring all but one of the country's top 17 teams.
Uribe scored three goals in Sunday morning's win over San Jose State, helping the Aggies build a 6-0 lead into the third period. Senior attacker Christi Raycraft managed two goals in the victory, including a 6-on-5 conversions in the first and fourth quarters.
Spartan freshman Adrianna Vogt finally broke the seal with 27 seconds left in the third, then was one of five SJSU scorers in a fourth-quarter comeback effort. Her second goal closed the Aggie lead to 7-5, then Davis High alumna Kathryn Hannum hit an extra-man goal in the final seconds to bring the final score to its one-goal margin.
In the nightcap, UC Davis trailed 2-1 at the halftime break, then fell behind by a 5-2 margin through three quarters. Uribe, Raycraft, Madeline Stephenson, Mary Lowe and Ashley Chandler scored one goal each to account for the Aggie offense, while sophomore goalie Casey Hines notched a career-high 14 saves in net.
Angela Turnbull, junior driver and former member of the Australian National Team, scored three goals for the Wahine.
UC Davis returns home for games against future Big West Conference foes UC Irvine and Long Beach State on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
