IRVINE, Calif. - Senior attacker Christi Raycraft scored a go-ahead goal with just 1:23 remaining to lift No. 11 UC Davis to an 8-7 win over sixth-ranked and previously undefeated San Diego State in the first round of the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament at Anteater Pool Saturday. The Aggies later lost to No. 3 USC, 12-1, to move into Sunday's battle for fifth through eighth place.
UC Davis moves to 8-4 for the season. The UC Irvine tournament field consists of all but one of the top 17 teams in the country, the lone exception being No. 13 Hartwick College of Oneonta, N.Y.
Senior Mary Lowe and junior Lindsay Kiyama each scored two goals in the win over the Aztecs. Kiyama netted both in the second quarter, helping the Aggies craft a 5-2 lead at the halftime break. SDSU recovered early in the third period, eventually tying the contest at 5-5 on a successful 6-on-5 chance by junior Jenna Schuster with 4:09 remaining.
UC Davis promptly regained the lead on the next possession on Lowe's second goal, then moved ahead by a 7-5 advantage heading into the fourth when senior Laura Uribe converted an extra-man opportunity with 1:12 to go. The Aztecs again battled back to a 7-7 tie as Schuster and Danielle Pelke hit consecutive goals midway through the final frame. Raycraft then atoned for six previous missed shots with her game-winner at 1:23.
Freshman Dakotah Mohr scored the lone Aggie goal in Saturday's nightcap against the Women of Troy. Her strike tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period, but USC finished the game with 11 unanswered to take the win. Sophomore Kally Lucas led her team with a hat trick, while three other Trojans scored two goals each.
The Aggies will continue tournament action with No. 7 San Jose State on Sunday at 9:15 a.m.
