STOCKTON, Calif. - UC Davis defeated Pacific, 4-3, Monday afternoon in its Big West Conference opener at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts in Stockton. The Aggies came from behind after dropping the doubles point to win four times in singles. With the win, UC Davis evens its overall record at 4-4. Robin Guier had what turned out to be the clinching win in singles.
In doubles, the Aggies won the first match that finished as Anita Athavale and Desiree Stone picked up an 8-1 victory over Kateryna Nezhura and Clara Shuhmacher at No. 3. The Tigers came back to win the next two matches and took a 1-0 lead in the overall match by claiming the doubles point.
UC Davis tied it at 1-1 when Stone defeated Olga Gumenyuk, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3. Herzyl Legaspi then posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nezhura at No. 4, and the Aggies had a 2-1 lead.
Shuhmacher followed with a straight sets win at No. 5 over Kaitlin Callan as the Tigers tied the match at 2-2. At No. 1, Randi Schuler gave the Aggies the lead back with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jolanta Twarowska. That gave UC Davis a 3-2 lead, and the Aggies needed one more win to clinch the team victory.
Guier provided that win when she defeated Svenja Arens, 6-2, 7-6. The Aggie senior won the second set tiebreaker, 7-0. The final point of the day went to Pacific as a result of a win at No. 6.
"It was a great win for us," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "It's the first win we've had against Pacific in the 13 years I've been here. To be able to come back after losing the doubles point is even more impressive."
UC Davis is next in action Saturday when it hosts Saint Mary's. The contest marks the beginning of a five-match homestand at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
