No. 11 Water Polo Splits Sunday Action

Feb. 17, 2008

STOCKTON, Calif. - Senior Laura Uribe scored three goals while Christi Raycraft and Ashley Greenwood each added two as 11th-ranked UC Davis beat Pacific, 15-7, in a non-conference women's water polo game at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool Sunday evening. The game was the second contest in as many sites for the Aggies, who lost at No. 2-ranked Stanford by a 10-5 final earlier in the day at Avery Aquatic Center.

UC Davis moves to 7-3 for the year. The Tigers, who picked up their second win earlier in Sunday's action, fall to 2-5. The Cardinal improved to 6-1.

In the win over Pacific, the Aggies did the bulk of their damage in the first and third quarters, scoring five goals in each period. Five different UC Davis players had a goal in the 5-1 first quarter, then Greenwood hit both of her goals in the second period. Two goals by freshman Dara Tawahara helped the Tigers close the gap to 7-4 at the halftime break, but Uribe scored twice in the third to help her team extend the lead to 12-4 after three quarters, effectively icing the win.

In Sunday's early game, freshman Dakotah Mohr scored two goals for the Aggies but Stanford junior Lauren Silver's four goals helped the Cardinal break away from a tight 2-2 first period. The Aggies were first to score when Raycraft converted her 6-on-5 chance just 90 seconds into the contest. Kelly Eaton and Heather West answered with two goals in quick succession to take the lead for the Farm, but Soza scored the equalizer on yet another extra-man opportunity.

However, Stanford enjoyed a four-goal second period, then shut out UC Davis in a 3-0 third. Eaton posted her second goal in the opening minute of the fourth to bump the lead to 10-3 for the Cardinal, connecting on her team's fourth 6-on-5 score.

Sophomore Casey Hines and junior Diana Pivacek shared net duties against Stanford. Hines had a season-best nine saves in three quarters of work, then Pivacek tallied two saves and two steals against just one goal in her fourth quarter in front of the cage.

The Aggies return to action at the UC Irvine Invitational on February 22-23.
