DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis will honor its 1998 men's basketball national championship team this week as part of a 10th anniversary weekend at The Pavilion. The events include a game Friday night featuring the 1998 championship team against other UC Davis alumni. The 1998 team will also be honored during halftime of the Aggies' contest against UC Santa Barbara Saturday night.
The game featuring the national champions and the alumni will be held at The Pavilion Friday night at 8 p.m. There is no charge for admission. The 1998 Aggies will be coached by Bob Williams, who led that team during its championship run. Williams, who is now head coach at UC Santa Barbara, spent eight years along the Aggie sideline. Current UC Davis coach Gary Stewart will coach the alumni team.
All but one of the 14 players on the 1997-98 UC Davis team will be playing in Friday's game. They include J.P. Bergez, Jason Cox, Scott Darmstadt, Justis Durkee, Brandon Laird, Travon Dugar Muhammad, current Aggie assistant coach Kevin Nosek, Dante Ross, Jon Surface, John Surina, Keith Jackson, J.C. Timmons and Chris Vlasic. Current Aggie administrative assistant Duane Kouba and Justin Clymo, who were both part of Williams' staff that year, will also be on hand.
The alumni team will feature Mike Arnold (1988-93), Tyler Boyd (1998-02), Dominic Callori (1999-03), JaQay Carlyle (2003-05), Joe Carroll (1992-94), Keith Johnson (1998-01), Rommel Marentez (2003-07), Ryan Moore (2001-05), Jordan Moss (1998-01), Phil Rasmussen (2003-06), Justin Stearns (2001-03), Danny Workman (1999-03), Brent Wyse (1998-02) and Darin Zabel (1988-91).
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of UC Davis winning the national championship. The Aggies won their final 22 games of the season and finished with a 31-2 record. The championship season culminated with an 83-77 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan in the title game in Lexington, Ky.
